Leprechaun Origins

If you want to talk about the most interesting film series around, the Leprechaun series would have to be considered to be on the list. Starting in 1993 and spanning to the latest film in 2014, this horror series consisting of seven films of a leprechaun running around on killing sprees while enjoying his drugs and hookers and trying to find gold. The whole concept is original enough but with plots centered in outer space, the hood, North Dakota, and Las Vegas, the atmosphere is through the roof in this series. Furthermore, it's a series that helped launch Jennifer Aniston's career which is a pretty interesting fact.

The newest installment in the series, Leprechaun Origins follows  around the newest leprechaun this time played by WWE star Hornswoggle who is now attacking American tourists hiking through Ireland. It is an original film for the series with a new atmosphere. The film is supposed to be apparently an origin film but it isn't clear on how it connects to the other films nor does it feel like an origin film.

This is basically a sequel asking us to forget everything about what came before in the previous movies. It does not have the comedic elements of the prior movies and it is very unclear if the monster is even a leprechaun to begin with. There is also nothing to the characters nor any reason to like them.

Maybe the only new thing from this new addition that you can like is the idea of it being set in Ireland. It does lack a budget but this whole film is set in Irish fields and cottages and you get to watch the Americans deal with crazy Irish locals which is another new plot element. The locals are also never given an explanation as to what happens to them in the third act. The third act is very cliché and uses some very tiresome formulas to close the film.

Sure, you could never say the six Leprechaun films before were anything special but Leprechaun Origins is really far off from what we expect from these movies. It lacks the charm that made the other films at least fun. I can also say that I never wanted Leprechaun original actor Warwick Davis back so much because it's not like Hornswoggle does anything noteworthy. The film is basically missing it's luck.

1.5/5
