As the 4th of July holiday approaches, my family usually goes away for a vacation and I don't get to watch too many movies at home or in the theater. Also usually, there is nothing out that I want to see. The last film I watched around the holiday break at the threaters was The Journey to the Center of the Earth which was just ok. This year is going to be a little different as The Amazing Spider-Man is coming out. I have never been a fan of reboot films as I don't really see the point of them. I was thinking the same thing last August when The Rise of The Plant of the Apes came out but actually that turned out to be one of my favorite films of last year, so you never know. With The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, it is obviously going to be a huge film but I still question whether it needs to be made.

When the first Spider-Man movie came out in May 3, 2002, I was a comic book and a film nerd and my younger brother had just been born five days earlier. I would be starting kindergarten in a few months. I remember seeing it at a now closed-down theater by our house. The movie along with The Avengers and the first Batman movie turned out to be some of my favorite superhero movies ever. One thing I really liked was how there were so many young actors in the leads inluding Toby Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco, all who's careers were just getting started. The Spider-Man movie helped turn them into household names. The movie was great all the way around from timing to structure to characters and and it was nearly perfect from Act 1 to 3.

The second Spider-Man movie came out in 2004. I haven't see in it in a while but just like Part 1, it is a really good film all the way around and introduced a pretty good villian, Doctor Octopus into the picture. I think it is one of the best movie sequels out there.
I didn't get into the third Spider-Man movie that much and it was not of my one of favorites films. I did like the dark side of this movie and the villians were good but it semed a bit lacking. It is not a terrible film but maybe this is when the series should have ended.
Again, my biggest problem with the new Spider-Man movie is that I really don't see the point. There already have been three movies that really showcased all we needed to see from Spider-Man. I do see that there is a new villain, Lizard. I guess this might be a reason for a new film but the previous movies had a lot of good villians. The new movie brings in a nice new cast but once again, the first three movies had this as well and I think it would be very diffiult to top the orginal characters and actors. The new movie does promise some new ideas but I bet they won't be as innovative as the previous movies.
I see that a lot of people like the idea of the film being darker but I thought the third movie was pretty dark.
I also think the new film is a money grab. It brings in a cast that could bring in some new fans. It is also shot in the 3D which is an extremely tired gimmick. There apparently also is a sequel planned in 2014 to make even more money.
Being a movie nerd, I will of course see The Amazing Spider-Man but I don't really see the need for another Spider-Man movie. It also seems a little crazy to already have a sequel in the works to follow this one. No matter how the new film turns out, I will always love the original films and they will always have a place in my heart. Maybe this one will add to that.
